This is a clean, censored version of my experimental painting I made some time ago. The colors went all wild, I also wanted to experiment with the watercolors a bit more. Sponge proved as a good tool (for the background).

Our first assignment in Illustration II this semester was to illustrate a single word, and to do it in a way so that it wasn't blatant nor achingly subtle. The word crocodiles kept cycling through my head- not as the word to illustrate, but as the subject matter- and so I chose "awkward" as my word and came up with the idea of a crocodile businessman bring home a wildebeest friend from work only to find his wife preparing exactly that for dinner. Heh. Awkward.

Everytime I see unicorns referenced in popular media or on girl websites or blogs they're always treated with reverence, majesty, fragile beauty, while farting rainbows and taking princesses to far off Escape-a-lot. Well... except for Charlie. No, no, no, no. This is what unicorns are like.

This was an art trade with Eric Schwartz. Eric is a dynamite cartoonist and I love his girl drawings but I wanted to draw a girl that was in some ways the opposite of his strong-willed, dynamic and outgoing characters. While this girl is no less pleasant and content than his regulars I tried to draw her loose limbed and in a compact, guarded pose to give the attitude that she'd rather be part of the background than in front of the spotlight.

I was stumping and stumping for an idea to draw tonight and the chosen theme (Drama Llama vs. the Fail Whale) wasn't doing anything for me. Then out of the blue a video was shown that provided the inspiration for this picture. Conundrum solved!
